Day Hikes That Saved My Weekend

When I don't have time for a full expedition, these 'tektok' hikes give me the mountain fix I need without the camping gear.

Day Hikes That Saved My Weekend

Sometimes life gets busy, and I can’t spare 3 days for a hike. That’s when I turn to “tektok” (day hiking). It’s intense—up and down in one go—but it saves the weekend. Here are my go-to spots.

1. Mount Papandayan: The Leisure Hike

Papandayan is where I go when I want to see something beautiful without killing my legs. The Dead Forest (Hutan Mati) is eerie and beautiful. I usually just walk up to the crater, take some photos, maybe scramble a bit higher if I feel like it, and head back for coffee in the parking lot.

2. Mount Bromo: The Morning Dash

Most people take the jeep. I tried walking it once from the village. It’s dusty, yes, but walking across the Sea of Sand feels like being on Mars. Standing on the crater rim listening to the roar of the earth is worth the dust in my shoes.

3. Mount Nglanggeran: The Sunset Spot

This isn’t a high mountain, it’s an ancient volcano. The path is basically rock hopping and squeezing through crevices. I love going here late afternoon. It only takes an hour or so, perfect for catching a golden sunset and heading home for dinner.

4. Mount Burangrang: The Workout

When I really need to sweat, sticking to the Legok Haji route on Burangrang is my choice. It’s steep, it doesn’t mess around, but it’s quick. 4 hours round trip and my cardio is done for the week.

Why Tektok? It’s pure hiking. No heavy pack, no tent setup. Just you and the trail.
