Pikiran Yang Matang: Self-Reflection Through Perunggu's Music

A deep reflection on letting go of overthinking, finding peace of mind, and coming to terms with life's dynamics through the song 'Pikiran Yang Matang' by Indonesian indie rock band Perunggu.

Pikiran Yang Matang: Self-Reflection Through Perunggu's Music

A work of art often holds a million meanings and interpretations for every listener. Everyone has a different perspective when capturing implicit messages, figurative language, symbols, and the emotional subjectivity emanating from a song.

Through this post, I want to share a bit of personal reflection inspired by a song I’ve been listening to a lot lately: “Pikiran Yang Matang” (A Mature Mind) by the music group Perunggu. Line by line, these lyrics genuinely helped me when I was truly overthinking at 27 years old.

Overthinking

Is everyone going through this, or what is overthinking really? Especially for guys, haha. We barely say ‘A’, but we’ve already mapped out plans from A to Z inside our heads—only to keep it all bottled up inside. Am I right?

Out of so many things on my mind, quite a few ended up turning into heavy, disturbing mental burdens. Overthinking turned me into someone full of regret, pain, and confusion.

Things originally outside our control end up consuming our thoughts. “Where did I go wrong?”, “If only I did this”, “If only I hadn’t done that”, and so on.

That state forced my brain to process every possibility simultaneously in a single moment—even when I didn’t know whether those things would actually happen or were just delusions in my head.

Thinking ahead and anticipating the future is indeed a good thing. But when done excessively, it only turns everything into anxiety and feeling trapped in uncertainty.

Through this writing, I want to document how I learn to let go of the burden of regret caused by overthinking, so I can grow into a more mature person without constantly looking back.

Diving Line by Line into the Lyrics

Like those posts people make on IG Reels or Facebook: “When you’re happy, you enjoy the music. But when you’re sad, you understand the lyrics.” Kinda similar to that~ when we’re happy we enjoy the flow, but when we’re sad, we look for a relatable song to help us process the emotions happening inside ourselves. Isn’t that how it goes for you guys? Haha.

Okay, let’s get into the lyrics (according to my personal take, of course) haha.

Dinding yang mulai berjamur
Setengah dua dan kubutuh tidur
Isi kepalaku tak lebih penuh
From TransJakarta yesterday at dawn

From a body and mind getting exhausted due to hard work under poor conditions; knowing you’re tired, yet staying up late at night, losing rest outside work hours. So many mental burdens piling up that shouldn’t even be on your mind, yet they creep in anyway.

Mulai hari ini saja
Berhenti menyaksikan polahmu
Tak apa jika semuanya terlewat
Tak pernah berdampak penting bagiku

Well for this one, honestly, you don’t really need to be spoon-fed, right? You get what I mean, haha. To share how I interpret music through my lens, and as a productive medium to dump my overthinking into writing, so I just write it down.

Essentially, regarding things that cause my mind to overfill and spiral—disrupting my mental health—starting today, I am learning to let go. Am I capable? Hehe, unfortunately, as much as I try, I’m pretty foolish when it comes to this. It’s okay. Can I truly let go of everything? I don’t know for sure, but I will keep learning to release what’s out of my control. That’s why I went back to school/studying, maybe to get smarter and not be foolish about these things, or easily fooled, haha. It’s fine, honestly I’m taking a remedial on this issue. Is it possible for you, me, and all of us to look after ourselves, just for a little while?

This lyric is also a wake-up call, helping me move past my denial phase. It’s okay if opportunities pass by. Doesn’t everything that happens eventually bring something good for us?

And if something doesn’t happen, doesn’t that mean there’s something far better being prepared? Ultimately, whatever is destined for us will somehow find its way back to us, won’t it?

Hari ini tak lebih seru
Hari ini tak banyak terganggu
Hari ini oh biasa saja
Makin nyaman jauh dari drama

Days I used to spend, accustomed to having her around, have now returned to ordinary quiet days that feel surprisingly peaceful—a.k.a. back to being lonely, lmao (laughing at my own silliness). There’s a sense of calm that comes when I learn to distance myself from drama and let go of things that might not be meant for me right now.

Hei, aku tak perlu kenal dirimu
Atau membaca tulisanmu
Kuharap semua tetap begitu
Banyak yang butuhkan perhatianku dan
Hei, kau pernah sita semua waktuku
Dan tak kembalikan satu pun
Hidupmu biar kau yang tahu
Banyak yang butuhkan perhatianku

Why did I have to fall into such a deep hole of overthinking back then? Why worry excessively over things not guaranteed to happen? No need to spell it out explicitly, you can figure out what happened. The core essence of the Perunggu guys really shines here.

Someone who never wins, let alone second place; he loses and ends up third. That’s what I understand from this band, haha.

The things I heavily invested time and effort into back then (though no regrets really, I loved that butterfly era too, lol, just saying it to sound cool maybe, but for what? It still won’t return what happened, right?). Even if you give someone your whole world and fulfill their every wish, if from the start you’re just third place, the last option, all your offers hold no value, bro. Still lose to their choice. Even if everyone places, your rival gets 2nd place (1st is themselves of course), and you get 3rd, the last option, bro. Haha, maybe this is what Maul or other Perunggu members felt when picking this band name.

Got carried away there, sorry! Back to the song: sometimes the stress I experience when overthinking affects those closest to me, making them anxious and confused. When I can make peace and let go of overthinking, I can be a better presence for the people around me. There are still many loved ones and real things that genuinely need my attention and care.

Harvesting in Calm Seas

Di laut yang tenang
Dan pikiran yang matang
Dan semua umpatan yang kuredam
’Kan kutuai semua yang kutanam

After coming to terms with everything, it feels peaceful. It’s not fully about letting go or total detachment; I think everyone still remembers, we just choose to bury it deep so we don’t constantly dwell on it, right? And be grateful for the process so far.

I understand that when something doesn’t go according to plan, it doesn’t mean I’m unworthy, but rather that a better destiny is being prepared. Or maybe I wasn’t worthy yet, being distanced or separated to be made fit, and reunited when I become the right person for them. Because this is Abadi (Eternal) (hahaha, thought the denial phase was over boss? Shh, stay quiet y’all, lol).

In calm seas and a mature mind, how we respond to life’s trials will determine what we reap. Now, it’s about focusing on being a good person for myself and those around me, and eventually, everything we plant, we will harvest.

Last but not least, big thanks to this blog and whoever reads this. Thank you so much for spending time reading my brain dump/thoughts, and to all my friends and loved ones who are always there on my journey. I am truly grateful to have you all.
