When living as an expat in Kuala Lumpur, there are moments when your palate suddenly craves West Javanese street food staples like fried batagor and steamed siomay drenched in peanut sauce. One popular spot among Indonesian expats to cure that nostalgia is Batagor & Siomay Bandung Mang Ujang, located in the bustling Chow Kit district.

Curing Nostalgia, But…

Honestly speaking, this place does a respectable job at curing home nostalgia. The enticing aroma of savory peanut sauce greets you as soon as you step near the stall.

However, evaluating the taste objectively, it is far superior back home in Java, especially near my hometown in Indonesia. No offense intended! But when it comes to authentic Indonesian street food, I can speak with confidence.

It’s decent, but feels slightly lacking on the palate—the fish/tofu texture and peanut sauce punch don’t quite reach the depth of authentic stalls back home.

The “Value-Oriented” Perspective

Beyond taste, the pricing feels a bit steep relative to the portion size. As a budget-conscious consumer (“tim mendang-mending”), comparing the price of a portion of batagor here, I’d personally prefer spending it on a full bowl of chicken noodles (mie ayam) that fills you up completely!

Yet, human nature being what it is, despite my mild critiques, I still find myself dropping by quite often whenever a sudden craving for Bandung street food hits!

Final Rating

I rate Batagor & Siomay Bandung Mang Ujang in Chow Kit a 6/10.

It’s worth visiting if you’re genuinely craving Bandung snacks in Malaysia and need an instant taste of home. Just don’t expect it to match the legendary street vendors back in Java!
